No service provider is ever obliged to accept an engagement. Every project is opt-in.

Freelancers choose which projects to take on; nobody is assigned work they haven't agreed to.

We apply clear control and supervision methods to every engagement, so quality doesn't depend on luck.

Defined review checkpoints and delivery policies apply across the network, regardless of which specialist is doing the work.

Data Control & Protection, By Default

Client and project data is controlled, protected, and never shared beyond the team assigned to it.

Access is limited by design, agreements are GDPR-aligned, and data-handling policies apply to every freelancer in the network.

Compliance Isn't Optional. It's Structural

Backbones Work Ltd is a registered UK limited company (SIC 71111, Architectural activities; SIC 71112, Engineering design and consulting activities). Each part of how the business operates is built around the specific legal framework that applies to it, not a single blanket jurisdiction.

Company standing: UK Companies Act 2006

Backbones Work Ltd is incorporated, registered, and governed as a UK limited company under the Companies Act 2006.

Data Protection: UK GDPR & Data Protection Act 2018

All client and project data is controlled and protected in line with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, with equivalent alignment to EU GDPR for French clients, and access limited to the team assigned to the work.

Service agreements: governed by contract, not assumption

Backbones works with an international network of independent freelancers engaged under clear service and contractor agreements, and with clients under service agreements that specify the applicable law for that relationship, rather than defaulting to one jurisdiction for every engagement.

Equal Opportunity: Equality Act 2010 (UK) principles

Backbones' engagement practices are aligned with the principles of the UK Equality Act 2010, so every independent professional in the network is engaged fairly, without discrimination on the basis of gender, nationality, age, or background.

Ethical commitments

Aligned with, though not yet certified by, the frameworks below, as part of a deliberate path toward formal certification such as EcoVadis.

ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work (1998)

Backbones supports the International Labour Organization's core principles of freedom of association, elimination of forced and child labour, and non-discrimination across its distributed, international network of independent professionals.

UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights

Backbones structures its contractor and team relationships to respect human rights due diligence, fair treatment, and transparent working conditions.

UN Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality

Backbones actively promotes equal opportunity for women in architectural, design, and technical roles, fields where women have historically been underrepresented, through fair, equal-opportunity engagement and equal pay for equal work.

UN Global Compact principles (referenced, not yet signatory)

Backbones' policies are designed in the spirit of the UN Global Compact's ten principles on human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption, as part of its path toward formal certifications such as EcoVadis.
